Earth Day / Arbor Day: Celebrating the Earth and Our Community

The Growing Center is pleased to announce our first major event of the season: our Earth Day / Arbor Day celebration on Sunday, April 24! The free event features a variety of family-focused activities, with interpretation available in Spanish and Portuguese.

Earth Day / Arbor Day: Celebrating the Earth and Our Community will take place at the Somerville Community Growing Center, 22 Vinal Avenue, Somerville, on Sunday, April 24 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. (Rain Date: April 30, 1:00 to 3:00 pm.)

Movement/Dance

Brenna Banister from Alive Dance Collective will offer a Storybook Movement workshop for children and their caregivers, with a read-aloud followed by lots of directed movement to help kids bring the story to life. Recommended ages 3-7. 2:30 & 3:30 pm

Nature Observations

Somerville-based artist Jane Sherrill, a painter who focuses on landscapes and nature, will engage visitors in nature-based activities by exploring tree colors, shapes and textures, showing children and adults alike how to polish their observation skills. She’ll ask questions like, What does a tree really look like? And, What colors and shapes do you see in the bark, the leaves? What is really there? What have we been missing? In 2021 Sherrill was awarded an LCC grant from Mass Cultural Council and Somerville Arts Council; this program is a part of this grant.

Seed Balls for Pollinators

The Somerville chapter of Mothers Out Front will help families and all participants to get their hands dirty, making “seed balls” with native seeds from the Growing Center and our partners. Participants can take home a seed ball to “plant” somewhere to support pollinators!

Compost

Learn about how food scraps are turned into a valuable soil amendment in our compost system. Sign up to join the volunteer compost team or bring your food scraps to the Center. Learn about how you can participate in composting locally–and how it connects to climate change. AND meet a giant red wiggler worm who is scheduled to visit the Center for this event!
